Eternal controversy: how old to start teaching a child music?

The debate about the age at which one can begin to learn music has been going on for a long time, but by and large a definite truth has not been born in these disputes. The supporters of early (and also very early) development are right, because a small child absorbs any available information like a sponge, laying a powerful foundation for further development.

Convincing arguments lead and opponents too early learning. These are emotional overloads, and the psychological unreadiness of the children for systematic occupations, and the physiological immaturity of their gaming apparatus. Who is right?

Educational activities for the youngest children are not at all modern know-how. Back in the middle of the last century, Japanese professor Shinichi Suzuki successfully taught three-year-olds children to play the violin. He not without reason believed that every child is potentially talented, it is important to develop his abilities from an early age.

Soviet music pedagogy regulated the teaching of music in the following way: from the age of 7, a child could enter the first grade of music school (there were seven classes in total). For younger children at the music school there was a preparatory group, which was taken from 6 years (in exceptional cases - from five). Such a system existed for a very long time, having survived both the Soviet system and numerous reforms in general education schools.

But "nothing lasts forever." New standards have come to the music school, training in which is now considered as pre-vocational training. It is a lot of innovations, including they affect also age of the beginning of training.

A child can enter the first grade from 6.5 to 9 years old, and studies at a music school continue for 8 years. Preparatory groups with budget places are now abolished, so those who want to teach children from an earlier age will have to pay quite impressive money.

This is the official position in terms of starting to learn music. In reality, there are now a lot of alternative options (private lessons, studios, development centers). A parent can, if desired, attach his child to music from any age.

When to start teaching a child music is a very individual question, but in any case it’s necessary to solve it from the position "the sooner the better." After all, learning music does not necessarily mean playing an instrument, at an early age you can wait with it.

Music - a type of art that children are able to perceive from the first days of life, and even before birth. Mother's lullabies, palms, palms and other folk jokes, as well as classical music sounding in the background - these are all the "forerunners" of music learning.

Kindergarten children study music twice a week there. This is far from a professional level, but there is no doubt that there is a benefit. And if you are lucky with the music director, then you can not worry about extra classes. You just have to wait for the right age and go to a music school.

Usually, parents think about the age at which they begin to study music, meaning how early it can be. But there is an upper limit of age. Of course, it is never too late to learn, but depending on what level of music education to talk about.

For general development, you can begin to comprehend musical art and retirement. But if we talk about professional possession of the instrument, then even at 9 years of age it is already too late to start, at least for such complex instruments as piano and violin.

So, the optimal (average) age of learning music is 6.5-7 years. Of course, each child is unique, and the decision must be made individually, given his abilities, desire, pace of development, readiness for classes and even health. And yet it is better to start a bit earlier than to be late. An attentive and sensitive parent will always be able to bring the child to the music school on time.
